Kung Fu/NinjaUnlike most popular martial arts, Kung Fu did not originate in Japan. Kung fu originated in China, where the base martial art eventually branched off onto different forms, each with their own signature style. The fast-paced movement of Kung Fu makes it exciting to see on and off screen, and has been made famous by artist such as Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jackie Chan. Tradition The traditional kung fu uniform consists of a jacket, pants and kung fu shoes. Most traditionally, the outfit is entirely black, and the jacket will have wooden toggles holding each side together. The pants tend to be either an elastic or drawstring waist with elastic at the ankles, which means that the pants will stay put during the extremely quick and sure movements that the art demands.
While black on black cotton uniforms are the traditional uniform, there are also the nicer, silk uniforms. These uniforms are generally worn for demonstration purposes only as they can rip easier than the stiffer cotton uniforms can. A white top with black pants can also be worn, and is a very striking combination to see during competition. As with the kung fu shoes, a silk kung fu outfit can also be worn for comfort in the home, as they breathe well and are extremely soft and light. |
